I received the Seven Pines Hudson Bay axe as a gift. Hudson Bay Axe name comes from being made in Europe and brought over to the Americas by the French to trade for furs and other goods in the Hudson Bay area. Hudson Bay axe was made for maximum utility and the Seven Pines Forge Hudson Bay axe is a great example. Small enough to take on trips, large enough to do heavy work. As delivered the beveled edge is very good to use. If you look straight at the edge you don't see an edge, which means you have a good edge. I used Arkansas stones and a strop to make it sharp enough to thin slice tomatoes. Then I used it a while on hardwoods to cut through some knots that were what I had been working on. This axe cuts tough wood. Cleaning the edge was by chopping with the grain into a soft wood green log nearby, the wet soft wood leave the edge clean. The axe went in deeper than expected, about two inches, and the 1 foot diameter log split. I am very impressed. One small issue is that the handle where it gets very thick at the end had a sharp burr, apparently from another axe falling on it in storage, this was not too deep, but a slight disappointment. The head is hung tight with a large round steel wedge and a wood wedge. The handle is darker as if antiqued, fixing the burr left a lighter color spot. This was an awesome gift. It will last a lifetime or several as an her heirloom, if the handle ever breaks the head is well worth re-hanging. Thank you Seven Pines Forge for excellent blacksmithing!
