I first heard/saw James Solberg when I went to a place called Vegetable Buddies in South Bend, IN many years ago. I was going to see Jimmy Dawkins, and it so happened that Dawkins was sharing the stage with Solberg and band. With this collection on the Ruf label, recorded in 1998 at Ardent Studios, Memphis, TN, James Solberg and band present a tasteful array of blues. Blues guitar fans should take notice. He bends the wires as needed, delivering a greasy,full tone, but does not go to excesses. James' vocals are smoky enough so the listener is not distracted, wishing for something more. Standout songs for me include: "The Hand You're Dealt", "Members Only", "Still Called the Blues" (with Luther Allison), and "Perfect Strangers". I appreciate these slow, soul tempos, as blues was meant to include. Yes, James has dealt us a good hand here. .
